Waipahu High School alumna Charieze Lianne Cacayorin was crowned Miss Universe Philippines Hawaii (MUPH) earlier this year. She will be celebrating her 24th birthday with a fundraising event tonight, Nov. 30, to support her journey as she competes on the national stage in Manila. As a first generation immigrant, Cacayorin felt ashamed of her culture when she moved from the Philippines at eight-years-old. At first, she was excited about Hawaii's large Filipino community, but being more connected to her cultural roots made her feel different from her peers. "I wasn't the type of local Filipino that you would see growing up, but more so someone straight from the Philippines," said Cacayorin. When she started studying…...

Plans to house hypersonic missiles in Hawaii years away, experts say

2+ day, 8+ hour ago (417+ words) HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii congresswoman said she's investigating reports that the U.S. Navy is planning to base a future arsenal of hypersonic weapons in the Aloha state. The missiles move so fast, military experts said there is currently no way to shoot them down. After years of research and development by the U.S. Navy, hypersonic missiles are now being tested for deployment on America's most advanced destroyer. "This is about how do we keep communities and servicemembers safer utilizing the best, most modern technology available," said U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii). Tokuda said she's heard about potential plans to bring those cutting-edge weapons and the destroyers that carry them to Hawaii once they're ready for use. "If I was having a conversation with aunty and uncle about hypersonics coming to Hawaii, bottom line is China has it to," Tokuda said. Retired three-star Adm....
